English Baroque Chest

English Copper Engraving Venus

This composition is anchored by a magnificent English chest of drawers, dating to the William and Mary period around 1700, and exemplifying the refined elegance of early English Baroque craftsmanship.
Featuring four spacious drawers adorned with luxurious rosewood and maple veneer, the chest rests gracefully on robust ball feet. Its original, hand-planed back panel bears the provenance stamp of Baron Bienerth, lending it historical depth and authenticity. Characteristic of the William and Mary style, the piece unites Dutch and English influences — reflecting King William III’s heritage — and stands as a testament to transitional design and sophisticated artistry.

Classical Art Reimagined

Above it hangs a rare, hand-coloured copper engraving titled Venus, drawn by Adam Buck, engraved by Roberts & Ziegler, and published in 1799 by William Holland in London.
Venus is depicted emerging from the sea, modestly covering herself in a classical pose. A poetic inscription beneath reframes her not as an object of desire, but as an emblem of beauty and spiritual love.

Still Life of Subtle Opulence

Arranged atop the chest is a carefully balanced still life: antique glass vessels — a Baroque wine glass, a covered goblet with engraving, and a bulbous wine carafe — all in visible use.
At the centre stands a richly decorated neobaroque silver fruit bowl, filled with raspberries, grapes, redcurrants, pomegranate, and apples.

A Taste of English Refinement

Together, these elements form a portrait of English taste after 1700: not displayed, but lived — between order, feeling, and subtle abundance.
