In Pink Flower Chef de Mulu combines expressive Western painting traditions with subtle references to East Asian ink painting.
The work thrives on a variety of painterly gestures: areas are brushed, scratched with an edge, dabbed in rhythmic motions, or applied spontaneously. Particularly in the brown-yellow zone on the right, this materiality becomes evident – a contrasting structure to the clear magenta field and the gesturally rendered blossoms.
The composition brings together decorative color intensity and gestural freedom. While the expressive energy recalls Neo-Expressionism and Tachism, the reduced black lines evoke the calligraphic quality of Japanese Sumi-e painting.
