Melted Moments

Art Gallery Imhof Fine Arts presents in Melted Moments a fascinating synergy of haptic form and atmospheric depth. The showroom juxtaposes Anna Snijder’s painterly layering, which dissolves stone and history into light, with Berger’s sculptural vision of an inseparable unity. It is a dialogue about the blurring of boundaries: while Snijder transforms the massive architecture of Venice into a fleeting moment through mechanical abrasion, Berger allows the physical distance between two bodies to dissolve into an emotional union.

In her work Venice, Anna Snijder creates a visual meditation on the morbid and timeless silence. Stylistically, she combines the atmospheric luminosity of William Turner’s late works with Gerhard Richter’s modern squeegee technique. Diffuse transitions and a complex sfumato effect allow what lies beneath to shine through only as shadowy forms, while graphic lines evoke the silhouettes of Venetian canals. It is the capturing of that specific autumnal morning mood in which the massive city and the fleeting weather of the lagoon permeate each other layer by layer on the canvas.

A haptic and emotional counterpoint is provided by the sculpture Melted Union by Berger. Two headless bodies, cast in a smoky shimmering aluminum surface, merge into an expression of intense physical and psychological intimacy. The forms press into one another, overlap, and blur their outlines, yet remain recognizable as two entities. The surface oscillates between smooth curvature and rough tension – a sensual language of form that speaks equally of vulnerability and strength. Berger lends the normally industrially cold material aluminum a deep emotional resonance through this fragmented, almost momentary composition.
