Sphere with Thorns - Veit Korn

In Sphere with Thorns, Veit Korn condenses Anröchter Kalkstein into a compact, spherical form. A narrow seam runs across the surface like a scar; all around, copper thorns are set into the stone, encircling the body and creating distance.

The sculpture stands as a metaphor for human existence: the sphere is the human being — closed, autonomous, vulnerable; the copper thorns are the defense born of fear. They safeguard integrity while holding closeness at bay, rendering the figure unapproachable and isolated.

Its starting point is existentialist: no meaning is given to human existence; meaning arises only through decision and action — under the weight of freedom and responsibility. In this logic, the work shows how self-protection simultaneously constrains freedom and how autonomy can tip into solitude.
