Biography

Franz Pixner (1912-1998) – A Life in Art and Resistance

Franz Pixner, born in 1912 in Ried im Innkreis, Austria, was an artist whose life and work were profoundly shaped by the tumultuous political upheavals and the artistic avant-garde movements of the 20th century.

Pixner began his artistic journey with an apprenticeship as a carpenter, which led him to the Federal College in Hallstatt in 1928, where he studied modeling and sculpture. His talent quickly became evident, and he pursued further studies at the Wiener Kunstgewerbeschule (Vienna School of Arts and Crafts) under the tutelage of renowned artists Michael Powolny and Albert Paris Gütersloh.

In 1937, compelled by his political convictions, Pixner traveled to Spain to join the fight against Franco in the Spanish Civil War. His commitment to the cause resulted in severe injuries, leading to his internment in a French camp. Following this, he sought refuge in England, where he continued his artistic work as a sculptor and illustrator. Pixner maintained his unwavering resistance against fascism by explicitly opposing Hitler’s annexation of Austria, as demonstrated by his signing of a declaration by Austrian associations in Britain.

After World War II, in 1947, Pixner returned to Austria, where he resumed his artistic career. From 1950 to 1951, he studied under the esteemed Professor Fritz Wotruba at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna. Pixner’s works, encompassing both drawings and sculptures, were influenced by contemporary movements such as Expressionism, Primitivism, Constructivism, and Cubism, reflecting his deep engagement with the evolving art scene.

Throughout his career, Pixner received numerous public commissions, cementing his place in the Austrian art world. He passed away in 1998, leaving behind a legacy of artistic innovation and political commitment. His work continues to inspire and resonate, standing as a powerful testament to the enduring intersection of art and resistance.
